University of Maine Police crack down in first full weekend after UMaine students’ return-9/6/11 “Law enforcement officials said Tuesday that police will strictly enforce drinking and traffic laws to send a message to new students and visitors to the university.  Campus police issued seven summonses for illegal possession of alcohol by minors during Labor Day weekend, according to university spokesman Joe Carr. In all, 15 students, including the seven who received summonses, were referred to the Dean of Students’ Office for possible punishment under the student code of conduct.”

Recent Alcohol-Related Tragedies involving University of Maine Students

Adam Baxter, 19, November 24, 2007, University of Maine How and why? Adam was at a friend’s home in Portland when an ambulance was called to the residence early Saturday morning for a report of a male having difficulty breathing. When they got there, they found Baxter unconscious and unresponsive. "Adam was declared dead at the scene.
Dylan Lyford, 19, February 14, 2009, University of Maine How and why? Dylan attended a party at a residence that started Saturday night and carried over into Sunday morning, where police confirmed that he was drinking.  Between 1:30 and 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Lyford was found at the bottom of a flight of stairs leading into the base-ment and was brought back upstairs to the apartment. Dylan Lyford died of serious bleeding from a skull fracture.
