Reported that Rochester Institute of Technology students Seth Policzer and Syed Ali Turab lost their lives in a fire that destroyed much of the their shared residence.

Reported that the fire had been determined to have started in a fireplace before it spread through a house.  It was also determined that both the young men had been drinking before the fire and would have been considered above the legal limit for driving.

Fire that killed 2 college students began in fireplace

ROCHESTER, N.Y.

Reported that the fire started in the fireplace did not have the typical metal base for such a purpose and included this quote from the local fire chief:
"While alcohol in this case may have had something to do with it, I don't think that's the whole lesson here and I hesitate to say that that's the root of this.  I think it makes a bad situation worse. Alcohol certainly didn't help this situation. It may have caused some unsafe behaviors."

At the one year anniversary of a fire, the fire chief reminds the public and area campuses in particular of the safety concerns and the increased risk when alcohol is present.
