Alcohol-Related Student Deaths-Fall 2006

Presented below is an unfortunate tabulation of alcohol related campus deaths reported in the media for the fall 2006 semester.  For every deceased student listed, at least three other college students are reported to have died, although the tragedy's connection to alcohol was unclear in media reports.

The information supplied for each victim is a tabulation of media reports. The circumstances and causes of the tragedies are summarized within the listing with more details contained in the associated link.

University's page Andrew Polakowski, 18, September 7, 2006, Ohio State University More Information Andy  was the last of 25 of students to enter an elevator on the third floor of Stradley Hall when it began to unexpectedly descend towards the lobby with the elevator doors open. Police reports said Polakowski had been drinking before the accident but didn't appear intoxicated. Accident associated with campus drinking

University's page Michelle Gardner-Quinn, October 7, 2006, University of Vermont More Information Michelle was last seen on a Saturday night shortly after 2:30 a.m. walking back to campus after a night out at downtown bars with friends. Police said she was walking with a man whose cellphone she had borrowed. Brian Rooney,a the 37-year-old Richmond man, is charged with sexually assaulting and then killing Michelle after he loaned her his cell phone on Burlington's Main Street  Assault associated with drinking

  Wilson “Willie” Maldonado, November 10, 2006, LaSalle University More Information Wilson died after driving the wrong way on eastbound I-76; he slammed his car into oncoming traffic.  He was driving while under the influence of alcohol. Accident while intoxicated
University's page Caitlin Brann, 22, November 10, 2006, University of Notre Dame More Information Caitlin lost control of her 2000 Chevy Cavalier, which veered sideways into the median and rolled many times.a chemical test revealed she had a blood alcohol level of .249 percent.   Whitney Young, November 16 , 2006,  Mesa College More Information  A 21-year-old San Diego State Student was drunk when his car struck and killed Whitney while she was crossing a street near San Diego State University.   Zach Dunlevy, December 10, 2006, Limestone College More Information Zachary was drinking for about four hours at a liquor-only party and became belligerent. Friends helped him back to his dormitory room and a roommate found him unresponsive and ‘‘blue in the face’’ in his bed.  He had died from an alcohol overdose according to police. Alcohol Poisoning
