Alcohol-Related Student Deaths-Spring 2012

Presented below is an unfortunate tabulation of alcohol related campus deaths reported in the media for the spring 2012 semester.  For every deceased student listed, at least three other college students are reported to have died, although the tragedy's connection to alcohol was unclear in media reports.

The information supplied for each victim is a tabulation of media reports. The circumstances and causes of the tragedies are summarized within the listing with more details contained in the associated link.

  Nathan Bihlmaier, 31, May 20, 2012, Harvard Business School More Information Nathan was reported missing and was found two days later in Portland Harbor.  Prior to being missing, he was asked to leave a bar near the harbor because of intoxication.  Tests showed his blood/alcohol level to be .22. College's page Everett Glenn 19, May 12, 2012, Lafayette College More Information Everett lost his life after drinking excessively while celebrating his 19th birthday.  The alcohol caused Everett to go into cardiac arrest.  In the partyís aftermath, 32 students were charged with various offenses, mostly relating to alcohol.   Spencer Pitts, 23, April 15, 2012, College of Charleston More Information Spencer lost his life when he slipped from a ladder while leaving a stargazing session with friends on the roof of residence and fell three stories.  Upon arrival, police observed beer cans scattered about on the rooftop area near where Spencer fell and noted all witnesses on scene had an odor of alcohol.   Clark Noonan, April 14, 2012, Saint Josephís College More Information Clark was in a car whose driver was participating in a game of leap-frogging with cars ridden by other St. Josephís students.  Clark was ejected from the car when it crashed.  Although toxicology results have not been release, police stated that they believe alcohol was involved and Clark had earlier that night attended a party from which others where charged with serving to minors. in spring 2012 Charles Edward "Tre" Jones III, 20, April 5, 2012, University of Alabama More Information Tre Jones lost his life when he drowned during a riverboat party hosted by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.   Treís cause of death was determined to be drowning and acute alcohol intoxication, and a toxicology report showed his blood alcohol content to be .133.   Robert Tipton, March 26, 2012, High Point University More Information Robert lost his life after one of his associates called 911 concerned that Robert was unconscious and possibly not breathing.  The toxicology report shows that Oxymorphone, Xanax and Klonipin (both benzodiazepines) were in Robertís system.  Robertís family filed suit against the University claiming that the University Presidentís son who was a member of Robertís fraternity which is accused of being involved with hazing was treated differently from other students and fraternities even though involved with keg parties and other possible offenses.   Blake Christopher Ayling, 20, March 24, 2012, University of North Dakota More Information Blake was found by a train conductor doing an inspection of a track early in the morning.  He was hit by a train as he was walking through the rail yard was hit by a train as he was walking through the rail yard where he routinely walked to get to campus from a friendís apartment.  Test showed that he had a blood alcohol content of .287. University's page Olivia Pryor, 18, March 19, 2012, Michigan State University More Information Olivia was found unresponsive in her dorm by her friends.  Authorities determined that alcohol was a factor in her demise and a man was charged with criminal sexual conduct injury to an incapacitated victim, selling or furnishing to a minor causing death and criminal sexual conduct force or coercion. Landau, 19, March 4, 2012, Illinois Wesleyan University More Information Friends found Brandon unresponsive and partially in a creek during a Sigma Pi fraternity gathering where the group rented cabins inside a park.  A forensic pathologist determined that Brandon lost his life from hypothermia with acute alcohol intoxication as contributing factor.   Franco Garcia, 21, February 22, 2012, Boston College More Information Franco was missing for seven weeks after leaving his friends after a night of drinking on February 22.  Friends at the bar said that Garcia had been drinking that night, but not to excess and didnít appear drunk.  He was found in Boston Reservoir near campus in April.
